CARE Ethiopia conducted a Rapid Gender Analysis to better apprehend the gender dynamics in the current El Nino crisis. It was conducted among the most relevant segment of communities in East Hararghe,West Hararghe, South Gondar and Afar zones. The study enables designing of appropriate interventions to build on the strengths and capacities of drought impacted men and women.

i. HIWOT-Health Improvement and Women Owned Transformation

It aims to improve the sexual and reproductive health (SRH) status including HIV/AIDS condition of 828,730 Women, men and children in 3 Districts in Zone 3 Afar by June 2009. In order to achieve sustainable and significant improvements in SRH status CARE has identified the following strategic directives to be adhered to:

Addressing underlying causes of poor reproductive health for identifying, preventing, and managing SRH risks.

ii. Healthy Unions-Community Engagement and Behavioral Change to Address Harmful Traditional Practices in Ethiopia

The Healthy Unions is a three-year project aimed at preventing the harmful traditional practices of bride abduction, bride price and early marriage. CARE is partnering with EGLDAM , a national organization. The final goal is: The goal of the activity is “to promote the human rights of girls and women in the Oromiya Region of Ethiopia by decreasing the interlinked harmful traditional practices of bride abduction, bride price and early marriage. CARE will be working in two zones in the Oromiya region of Ethiopia: West Hararghe and Borena. These two Zones were chosen based on prevalence of bride abduction, bride price, and early marriage; the diversity in the population; and the geographical presence of CARE and its partner.

iii. Afar Women and Girls

The Afar Women and Girls Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) and Livelihoods Rights Project aims at fulfilling and protecting the rights of 115,327 women and girls living in Afar pastoralist communities in 5 woredas through the elimination of FGC and other interventions enhancing women and girls’ empowerment. In total, the project will directly benefit 269,042 women/ girls and men / boys.

Project Objectives

Reduction of FGC practice among girls through awareness creation of SRH rights and behavioral change with in the community. Targeted women and young mothers establish stable and diverse economic livelihood household assets. Education marginalization of girls and young mothers is addressed.

Local (traditional, statutory) governance process become increasingly responsive to women/girls’ SRH rights and livelihood security through an established institutional framework (that includes an anti-FGC regional law and enforcement)/monitoring systems and capacities

iv. BIRHANE-Building Improved Reproductive Health of Adolescent Girls through Networking and Economic Empowerment

The goal of the BIRHANE project is to enhance the economic and SRH status of 8,000 adolescent girls in South Gondar Zone. The objectives Project are:

· Improved economic status for 8,000 adolescent girls

· Enhanced access to quality SRH information and services for 8,000 adolescent girls

· Evidence-based lessons generated on the impact of an economic empowerment intervention on adolescent girls’ SRH status.

v. ResPECT-i

It is an initiative being implemented in two Field offices to prevent and respond sexual abuse and exploitation.
