  • Participatory Impact Assessment: a Guide for Practitioners: The Feinstein International Center at Tufts University has been developing and adapting participatory approaches to measure the impact of livelihoods based interventions since the early nineties. Drawing upon this experience, the guide aims to provide practitioners with a broad framework for carrying out project level Participatory Impact Assessments (PIA) of livelihoods interventions in the humanitarian sector. Other than in some health, nutrition, and water interventions in which indicators of project performance should relate to international standards, for many interventions there are no ‘gold standards’ for measuring project impact. This guide aims to bridge this gap by outlining a tried and tested approach to measuring the impact of livelihoods projects. The tools in the guide have been field tested over the past two years in a major research effort, funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and involving five major humanitarian NGOs working across Africa.   • Doorways: Student, Community Counselor and Teacher Program to Reduce Gender-Based Violence in Schools USAID’s Office of Women in Development is pleased to announce the release of the Doorways training manuals. The Doorways manuals, developed under the USAID-funded Safe Schools Program, were designed to break the cycle of violence in and around schools by working directly with teachers and students (ages 10-14) to develop healthier and safer classrooms and with community members to help young people survive violent or abusive situations. The set of manuals can be used as part of a gender violence prevention program and in conjunction with existing HIV/AIDS prevention work to better protect children from HIV infection. Piloted in Ghana and Malawi, young people and adults who participated in the programs demonstrated positive changes in attitudes and knowledge concerning gender-based violence.   • Study tracking Official Development Assistance for RH in conflict-affected countries : This study represents a first systematic attempt to track official development aid disbursement to reproductive health activities in conflict-affected countries. Most importantly, this study provides evidence of inequity of RH ODA disbursement between conflict-affected and non-conflict-affected countries, and explicitly demonstrates a decline in funding for RH activities (other than HIV/AIDS-related) in conflict-affected countries. It also draws attention to the pressing need for increased and better targeted funding to RH activities in conflict settings, with emphasis on family planning and emergency obstetric care.
